Memorial Day Memories!

When I was growing up in Northwestern NJ it seemed like it always rained on Memorial Day! I would be so excited about the picnic my grandparents or my family would have. My 30 or more cousins would come over, we would have such a grand time playing, etc. But then the night before or that morning it would start raining!! One year my parents were having the picnic and our huge apple tree fell on the wooden picnic table and broke it right in half!! That picnic table would hold 15-18 people easily, but not after that! We had a large detached garage so my Dad would pull the family car and his truck out of the garage and then we would set up folding tables and chairs. We would put paper red, white and blue table clothes on the tables and set the table with pretty paper plates, cups and napkins all in the red, white and blue theme. Then my cousins and their parents would come and we would have such fun just listening to the grandparents and aunts and uncles talking about the olden days. The food would be plentiful and so good! If the rained stopped we would be able to go outside for a little while and play tag or red light, green light. I'm sure the grandparents, aunts and uncles were happy about that :)!! Those days seem many, many years ago and now my cousins are all scattered around the US and a few around the world. This year John and I are just staying home and taking a day off. The girls and their husbands are doing the same. I think with all the moving, workload at work, baby showers to plan, etc., etc. we all just need to chill this year! Hope everyone will be enjoying their day off (if they have it off) whether you are at a picnic or just plain staying home relaxing!!

I got these next pictures off the Martha Stewart.com website.

Nice Memorial Day themed table.

Great red, white and blue sand layered these glass candle holders. You could use mason jars too for a down home feeling!

Here is a beautiful picnic planned by a lake!

Who wouldn't want to eat these cupcakes. What a wonderful presentation of them and very patriotic!!

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY EVERYONE!!

Your post reminded me how great it is to get together with all of the cousins. Our little family of four is settled on the east coast now and my entire family and cousins are in CA so I miss the big get togethers.

Memories of the holidays spent with family are the best!! I'm glad no one was sitting at that picnic table when the tree fell over! I love the flag picnic table in your picture! I know what you mean about needing to take it easy. We worked on the big move out yesterday. Got all of our daughters things out of the house she rented during her senior year of college, packed into a truck, drove the 3 hours home, unpacked the truck, put up shelves and are now transforming her bedroom into a temporary "storage facility" (until she finishes her volunteer year and needs to move somewhere else for a job.) We are exhausted. Tomorrow we are taking it easy, and will be having dinner with my best friend.

Sounds like you had lovely Memorial Day picnics even with the rain. Our families are so busy that it will just be Don and I. I haven't even planned a meal yet. I always love the way Martha Stewart does things up. Enjoy your Memorial Day.

Sounds like you have some wonderful memories. We never have too much going on for Memorial Day, just a little get together with a barbeque. Hope you have a good day :)

Ring of Kerry, Ireland
My husband, John and I went to Ireland for our 25th Wedding Anniversary in 2004. We had an awesome trip and we will never forget it. We actually got to visit our friends who live in Northern Ireland. We spent 3 wonderful days with them! The picture above was taken when we visited The Ring of Kerry. The beauty of Ireland is just spectacular! If you ever get a chance visit there.
Megan is my oldest daughter. She and Ken were married on April 12, 2008. It was a wonderful ceremony and reception!
Jenny and Kevin at their wedding 8/30/08. The wedding was at our home and turned out wonderful! Everyone had such a good time!
